Nerve Pain Worthing

Nerve pain is a common reason people seek treatment from our team in Worthing. We understand just how debilitating and worrying  life can be when you are in pain, especially with nerve pain, so rapid access to treatment is our priority.

Irritation of nerves can cause a variety of symptoms from pins and needles and numbness to burning. The symptoms and pain can occur anywhere along the nerves pathway, commonly affecting the arms, legs or face.

There are many reasons why a nerve can become irritated, inflamed or compromised. Disc problems in the neck or low back, muscle tension around the nerve and direct bony pressure, are all potential causes. Other medical causes to be consider include MS, diabetic neuropathy and tumours.

In this blog post we cover some of the more common nerve pains seen in clinic.

Common nerve pains

Sciatic nerve pain is one of the most common reasons patients attend our practice for treatment. Pain affects the leg and can be severe and debilitating. Sciatic pain commonly occurs as a result of joint or disc problems in the lower back. The sciatic nerve starts has it’s origins in the lower part of the back, goes all the way down the back of the leg and in to the foot. Symptoms of sciatica can be experienced in any part of the nerves pathway and can come on gradually over time or suddenly with little or no warning. Sciatica symptoms will generally resolve over time, depending on cause and severity and can last around 12 weeks. Early intervention may help to speed recovery and provide management advice to enhance response times.

Carpal tunnel syndrome- giving rise to nerve pain in the hand. This can cause issues with dexterity in the hand and fingers. Carpal tunnel results from a compression of the median nerve at the wrist. This may be due to trauma, fracture, degeneration or inflammation. It can also occur as a result of pregnancy, thyroid issues or diabetes.

Trapped nerves in the neck- this can lead to pains in the shoulder, arm, forearm, hand or entire limb. Pain can be similar to that of sciatica, just in the arm and not the leg.
