EFT (emotional freedom technique) is one of the most exciting, powerful techniques developed over the last two decades. It is also commonly known as ‘tapping’.

It is one of the new ’Energy Psychologies’ with its roots in acupuncture, kinesiology and psychology. Its like an emotional form of acupuncture without the needles, you simply tap specific points on your body with your fingertips.

How does EFT work?

EFT is based upon the discovery that imbalances in the body’s energy system can have a deep effect on a person’s psychology. Feeling an unwanted negative emotion causes the energy flow in the meridian pathway to become disrupted.

EFT is a very effective yet gentle method of directly rebalancing the disrupted energy. Its almost like clearing a log that’s blocking a stream, the log being a stuck emotion in your stream of energy (meridian).

EFT relieves symptoms by tapping (with two fingers) certain meridian points as we tune into, or focus on the problem. The tapping re-balances the energy in the meridians that has become disrupted when thinking about, or experiencing, an emotionally disturbing circumstance. Once balanced, the upset it usually resolved -the memory remains but the emotional charge has gone.

Origins of EFT

The founder of EFT, Gary Craig trained with psychologist Roger Callaghan, who had been studying kinesiology and acupuncture. Callaghan had found that an anxiety patient of his felt her anxiety about water in her stomach, so using his recently learned knowledge, he had her tap on a stomach acupuncture point below her eye, and to his astonishment, she proclaimed that her fear had gone and she rushed to his swimming pool to feel the water! Years later, her fear of water had never returned.

After many such ‘miraculous’ cures, where other methods had failed, Callaghan developed TFT – Thought Field Therapy, working with the body’s meridian pathways. He developed specific algorithms for each symptom or issue. Gary Craig, searching for the simplest way to use this therapy, found that 14 points were always included in each algorithm, irrelevant of the presenting symptom, so tried just tapping these points for every single problem. The results were outstanding and EFT was born.

Common conditions helped;

EFT can treat a whole host of issues including;

•Negative emotions

• Depression

• Phobias

• Cravings/habits or addictions

• Stress

• Anxiety

Limiting Beliefs; “I’m not good enough”

• Traumatic memories

• Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

• Physical pain

The same technique is applied for anything,
from fear of public speaking to improving your sporting performance.

What to expect in a session

Each session will last approximately an hour and is taken place sitting normally in a chair – or lying I will ‘tap’ on specific points while we are talking.

Following an EFT session, the dispelled feelings very rarely return. If they do it implies that there is a bit more work to do on a specific issue. Of course you can still feel angry, fearful or guilty (for example) about other things – and it might be appropriate to do so. But if you have thoroughly used EFT for a specific issue, the feeling will not return. Once you have sent the problem ‘downstream’, it does not come back up. You will still retain the memory of the event you were working on but it will no longer have the emotional charge that it had before. The other thing to say is that there may be more than one emotion or issue that needs to cleared – more than one log jamming the stream.
